So, I finally watched all of The Office in sequence, thanks Netflix…

So, I finished The Office. It was like saying goodbye to a good friend. I am sure that all of us have felt that way at one time or another when finishing a series. I watched The Office over the … Continue reading

So, Netflix is more valuable to me than I thought…

So, Netflix is pretty flipping awesome. Besides the fact that I can watch Friends no matter where I am day or night and ridiculously amazing original shows like Master of None and The Crown, it keeps my racing mind slow … Continue reading

So, my television viewing is just as eclectic as my writing…

You guys know by now that when I write, I am all over the place. That is because I have a million things on my mind all of the time and I want to say or do all of them at once. I was looking through Hulu tonight on our Wii because we divorced cable a couple of months ago. Hulu has improved so much!! They had Green Acres, I Love Lucy, A Different World, The Brady Bunch and then I found all of the Real Housewives shows. That is my real guilty pleasure when I don’t want to think of anything:).

I started Green Acres from episode 1 because growing up in the 70’s and 80’s and watching the reruns, it is not like I could watch them in order. Hulu used to suck big time!  They used to have oodles of obscure Asian titles, not there is anything wrong with that, but I am not Asian so they were not titles I was interested or familiar with. And no, I don’t have a problem with Asian shows or people. Had to say it because some people read more into things than necessary. Anyway…they have shows with the complete series available. They still have some shows where they have 8 episodes that are the more current ones, but now I can watch so many shows that I got to watch as a kid. And, in a few days they will have all of the Seinfeld episodes in the way that Netflix closed the deal with the Friends Franchise.

So, in addition to reading the Bible more and the entire stack of books beside my bed, I think I will be delving into Hulu this summer if it can keep a connection! My list to watch from beginning: Green Acres, The Brady Bunch, West Wing, Seinfeld (even though I have most of them and have seen them all), House of Cards, Parenthood and the Blacklist. I have seen a lot of House of Cards and the Blacklist and some of Parenthood on Netflix, which I have always used more than Hulu. But Netflix better up their game because there is competition. Amazon Instant Video is improving too. It sucks for Netflix that they came up with whole idea and other companies are pulling the rug out from under them so to speak.

Okay, this is my PSA tonight. Get rid of cable. There are too many good things to watch on these streaming services and saving money is one side effect and the most important one is sharing fond memories of days past with those you love…

So, I broke up with cable again. Gave it the boot and told it “Sayonora”

It took me a few weeks to get the junk tv aka reality tv out of my system knowing I would be turning the cable box in. I really got attached to flipping through meaningless tv as a downtime activity for myself. Well, I lost one of my gigs which equaled to around 600-750 a month. Until I get another gig or more substantial income, the sensible and respectable thing to do is to cut costs. Cable is just not a necessity. I mean in today’s world of Netflix and Hulu and Amazon Instant Video all streaming through my Wi or laptop or phone or iPad, I can watch a plethora of QUALITY programming and not miss out on much.

Well, though I have paid my PayPal Credit down substantially, I decided to buy an antenna through one of the eBay electronic stores. Before you get visions of rabbit ears stuck in your mind, it is not like that at all. The new antennas could double for some sleek modern art, or a super anorexic router. It’s this molded piece of plastic that you can stick pretty much anywhere you like. Since I hooked it up last night, it is currently on top of the curtain rod because that is where it seemed to get the best reception.

Currently, I only get NBC, Antenna TV (funnily enough), CCTV and a few channels related to news in Asian and African countries. I am not thrilled with the selection, but it is kind of nice to have a national network to watch the news or a current tv show or sporting event. I am hoping eventually it will pick up more channels. I got the 50-mile radius one so that I could pick up D.C. and Baltimore, hoping that would give me a lot of channels. If I had only purchased the 30-mile radius one, I may not have as many channels as I do, so I am grateful for the one I purchased.

I will have to admit that going from cable to no cable is a great leap. This is my 3rd time doing it, but it doesn’t get easier each time. But I can tell you one thing, I am reading and using my time more wisely now. I have already checked my work emails, typed this, loaded and unloaded the dishwasher and had breakfast. If I had cable, I probably would have only eaten breakfast.

Think about losing cable. As long as you have the internet, the streaming providers like Hulu and Netflix really do offer stellar programming and with Hulu, you can see the show you missed the next morning. Look at it this way, unlike breaking up with a person, you can easily get cable back if you just can’t live without it!

Have a Happy Hump day and Earth Day!

So, is it just me, or is it a sad state of affairs when I have to turn to Hallmark channel for tv because nothing else is on?

I didn’t have cable for 2 plus years and lived wonderfully on Netflix and Hulu. Now that we have it because my mom thought my kid should have it, besides maybe 3 shows, I could care less. It is interesting that Bravo calls a tv show “scripted tv” because I guess everything else is “reality”. This post is not profound, clever or even particularly meaningful. It is just me wondering if I am the only person that thinks that Netflix and Amazon Instant Video has better series than traditional television? As much as I am complaining about tv, it is so hard for me to let cable go again. The first time was like a breakup. I unhooked the cable box and it took me one week to part with it. Now, I feel like I am being reunited with a lover again to only find out that there was a reason I left him in the first place. So, maybe once summer hits, I will tell cable goodbye again. At least, until Christmas as I have done in the past. This will not be the last time I am sure, because it is something about Christmas time and cookies and cold weather that makes me want to watch 24 hours of happy family Hallmark movies and It’s a Wonderful Life and A Christmas Story and everything that we have on dvd but is somehow more enjoyable on cable.:)
