So, I think we should all just be nicer. More considerate. Less selfish. Self awareness is great, but being aware that someone exists outside of yourself is pretty awesome too. Why should you be nice or caring towards others?
1. It’s Free and Simple
It doesn’t cost anything. There is no membership fee, it doesn’t take away from your precious time (time is money for many) and the rewards reaped from being decent to someone are priceless for the giver and receiver. A simple smile or a wave hi, can make someone’s day and perhaps give them renewed hope in mankind. And you don’t have to donate money or tons of time to do this!
2. Helping Others Helps us to Forget Our Own Problems and See How Fortunate We Are
If you are going through something, there is nothing like getting out there into your community and helping to fill a need. That good deed, whether you are working an hour at a soup kitchen or knitting mittens for the homeless is helping to improve the lives of other people and taking the focus off of you. It can also help us to realize how small our issues really are.
3. It Makes EVERYTHING Better
Being kind and nice and smiling every chance you get, doesn’t just touch others. It actually makes YOU feel better. Results of a conversation, even over the phone, when a person starts out by smiling, it sets the tone for what will take place next. Need to make a sale or resolve an issue? Your tone of voice and a positive approach to a person or situation will yield great results. People are more willing to go out of their way for you if they are treated nicely.
4. Good Will Happen
So whether you are Christian like me, or whatever your faith or belief system, the Golden Rule works in every culture. By treating people fairly and decently (the way that you want to be treated), good will come to you. The whole what goes around comes around thing comes into play. If you keep living your life with goodness and spread it wherever you go, or when you are able, your time will come. It may be slowly, but it will surely happen.
So, do like Santa Claus says! Be Good for Goodness Sake. What have you got to lose? Well you certainly have a lot to gain! Including the adorable smile lines that will crop up at some point, denoting to everyone that you have lived a good life.
