So, this may offend some…

What’s something most people don’t understand?

So the first thing that came to mind was Education and healthcare are never free. Someone pays. In a big way.

Countries who down the United States because we do not have free Healthcare and Education for everyone are generally smaller than we are, yes there are exceptions. And they fail to tell you that to offer that to every single citizen, there are sacrifices.

Taxes are generally 20 percent more in countries with these free programs. And people who earn more pay more, even if they are not enrolled.

These are just a few of the caveats according to articles, an Uber driver we met in December, an aunt who has lived in UK for 50 years, friends and other people we have met from countries who offer this:

Healthcare:

Long procedural waiting lists

Severe staff shortages

Infrastructure that may not be as modern

Difficulty in accessing care

Education:

Overcrowding

Sustainability

Over enrollment/strain due to international students

Higher Taxes

Some students waste resources, enrolling but never graduating

According to research I have done, England has stopped free college tuition for everyone. I am sure that undeserved populations can attend for free or for a small financial obligation, much like poorer populations in the U.S.

I think it would be great if everything that could help us succeed as humans could have no cost attached to it. But I the pragmatist, know it is a beautiful dream, but indeed a dream. And it just isn’t  feasible.

Please don’t shoot the messenger:)

  2. A couple of Canadian friends report the same as you for disadvantages of universal “free” health care. They noted that all that is keeping the Canadian Medicare afloat is the wealthy Canadians who bypass the system and come to the USA to pay through the nose in order to get the care they want in the time they need.
