So, I watched the original Footloose tonight…

So, I watched the 1984 Footloose tonight thinking it would be cringe. I was elementary age when it came out so I did not know if I idealized this movie. Man I was right as a kid, it was good! A little dramatic and over the top? Sure! But that is the 80s.

I am a big John Hughes fan, so a lot of 80s movies not affiliated with him, can be subpar in my eyes. I love some that aren’t Hughes, like: Can’t Buy Me Love, Valley Girl, Girls Just Want to Have Fun. But the rest of them are more cookie cutter 80s.

So when deciding to watch Footloose I wasn’t sure what I would get. Man, it is every bit as exciting and “bad ass” as I thought. Kevin Bacon was awesome. He was the bad guy without being too bad. Misunderstood, cool, a rebel who could dance.:)

It is fun going down memory lane sometimes, but often times there is disappointment because things are not as enjoyable after childhood. Well Footloose surpised me, brought a smile and definitely had my toes tapping.

My kid was Rusty, Ariel’s best friend, in Footloose the Musical last summer. Hearing her sing Let’s Hear it For the Boy and some of the harmonies to songs that were just background in the movie, was pretty cool. Though the musical did a great job with the songs, it does not hold a candle to the movie.

Sometimes going back in time through a movie or book or song can be a little sad. As a result I tend to avoid. But I am glad I took the chance. Thinking about a movie or book from your past? Try it. You may be pleasantly surprised.
